Nation Building

Intellectual property protection is the most basic building block of a successful market economy and a participatory democracy.
Legal protection for the expression of creative ideas and the outcomes of scientific research is essential for the development and long-term grown of a national culture of business and innovation.  Understanding the concepts and importance of laws protecting patents, copyrights and trademarks is critical for leaders to move a nation from failed-state or early-stage development to a full participant in the world economy.

IIPI specialists create education and training programs tailored to the cultural needs of particular audiences and countries.  IIPI experts conduct seminars for legislators, judges and government staff to explain the legal definitions and necessary enforcement of intellectual property rights.  IIPI joint projects on cultural heritage train scholars and local staff to identify, conserve and properly exploit the economic benefits of national historic sites, arts, crafts, design and architecture.

IIPI Spotlight on Cultural Heritage

The overlap between intellectual property and cultural property is gaining international attention.  UNESCO's Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage and WIPO's Creative Heritage Project are two manifestations of this important nexus.  IIPI is interested in promoting culture in all its manifestations.  Read selections of IIPI VP Molly Torsen's work on the topic here.
